A Personal Letter from Susan Gregory:

When My Faith Became More Real Than Ever

In 2007, after many years as a Christian, my faith became more real to me than I ever thought possible. I’m a single, older woman with grown children and grandchildren. Over the years, I had been deeply involved in my church, worked for ministries, and participated in Bible studies and Christian meet-up groups. Yet, despite all this, nothing could have prepared me for the biggest challenge of my life.

At the time, I owned a real estate investment business. I purchased residential and commercial properties to hold or rehab and sell. I had work crews, multiple properties in various stages of rehab, and an office team. But as the “Big Short” crisis began to unfold, everything came crashing down. Money froze up. Homebuyers couldn’t get loans, which meant I had no buyers for my properties. And yet, I still had wages to pay, building expenses piling up, and mortgages looming. During the spring, then experts called the downturn a “financial correction,” I drained my business reserves, and when those ran out, I turned to my personal savings.

Eventually, everything was gone.

By December 18, 2007, I was down to my last $20. It was the dead of winter, cold and snowy. Bills were piling up, including heating and other utilities. I had no idea what to do.

I cried more tears than I thought was possible. I was at the end of myself—emotionally, financially, and spiritually.

I didn’t tell anyone, not even my friends or family, because I didn’t need another loan. I needed a solution. So I prayed and prayed. And I remember one morning lying in bed, asking God, “Are you going to let me go lower than this?”

That’s when I realized I had reached the end of myself.

For years, I had been resourceful and could figure out solutions to most problems. But this time was different. I was standing on the edge of hopelessness.

A few days later, as I was getting ready for the day—without praying or doing anything “spiritual”—God spoke to me. His Spirit touched my spirit. He said, “Write about the Daniel Fast.” I had used the Daniel Fast before, so I knew about it. But this felt like an assignment from God.

I started a simple blog and wrote about the Daniel Fast. I worked from 6 in the morning until 11 at night. I have to admit now, desperation was my fuel.

At the time, there were no Kindle or Nook books, so I created an eBook in PDF format and offered it for $4.95. On December 26, 2007, I made my first sale. I was overjoyed. If you saw me, you would have thought I had won the lottery!

More sales started coming in, and soon, people were asking for recipes. So, I created the first version of the Daniel Fast Cookbook and sold it for $7.95.

God blessed my efforts in ways I couldn’t have imagined. He knew people needed this information, and He gave me the assignment to provide it at affordable prices. That simple act of obedience changed the course of my life. Since then, I’ve had many books published about the Daniel Fast, and I’ve had the privilege of ministering to millions of women and men worldwide.

But the most significant change wasn’t in my work—it was in my heart. In the midst of my brokenness, God showed me a deeper level of intimacy and faith. He became more real to me than ever before. I didn’t just know about Him. Now, I experenced Him as my loving, caring, and all-knowing Father, and I’ve experienced His goodness in ways I never imagined.

Out of this journey, Faith Driven Life was born. I started hearing from people who wanted to grow in their faith, and so I created courses and, eventually, the Kingdom Insider and Kingdom Visionary membership programs. Through these programs, I help people draw closer to Jesus and integrate His ways, truths, and promises into every part of their lives.
