Watch Your Words
Take a minute. Quiet any chatter than might be going on in your head. Now think about this truth: every word you say has power. Words are like seeds that come from your heart and are sown into the hearts of those who hear them. Not just the words you want people to receive. No, every word. And that’s why God calls us so deliberately to watch our words. We see in Deuteronomy 6:6 that it’s the way He uses His words:
And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
The power of our words was very evident to me recently when I received a few of their hurtful blows. I don’t think the people saying them to me realized the impact of their words. In fact, I don’t think a lot of people give words the high regard that the Lord give them.
I had to wrestle with words and how I would respond. The whole experience caused me to take a look at my own use of words and how I want to be wise and prudent when I speak. I want well-chosen words to come from my mouth. I want to be like Jesus and choose the words He chose:
For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.
Every day we speak thousands of words. They are the primary way we communicate. We’re like fountains of seeds being sown into the world, each with potential to build up or tear down. Each with power to encourage our discourage. Each with energy t o love or to hate. And the source of all those words is our heart: “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45
